Fishing at Jake's Northwest Angle

From our resort, you can easily access Minnesota or Ontario waters. Each has its own benefits – in Minnesota waters, the size of the walleyes is larger, but so is the water. There isn’t sheltered water. The limit is 4 walleyes a day, and bass/musky fishing is very limited. There are no bait/alcohol restrictions.

In Ontario, you’ve got by far the majority of the sheltered waters, you are more weatherproof. In our part of the lake, the islands are not developed, and are 99% public land. You get that remote fly-in feeling. Ideally, if a person is flexible, both bodies of water offer different experiences. At the same time, we feel people are missing out if they don’t buy an Ontario license for approximately $25 and spend a couple of days out there. Our guides almost exclusively fish the Ontario waters. Until you do it, crossing the border to drive to the Angle or to go fish in Ontario can seem daunting. It’s something we do on a daily basis, it’s not difficult, and we will take the time to explain how to do it. The reward for the people who are willing to cross that line is a vacation experience that you will not be able to match. From a value and quality standpoint, the experience of fishing this lake is something you won’t find anywhere else in Minnesota, and you’d have to go a lot farther north, for a lot more money, to match.

Perhaps this is a good way to express it: A client of ours who lives in Manitoba said it best when they changed their annual fishing trip (which was a 5 hour drive north of Winnipeg and then a float plane ride in to the cabin) for a trip to our place. When he was paying his bill, we asked him what he thought of his vacation. He said, “I don’t know what we’ve been doing! I can come here and fish three times in a season for the price of one trip up there, and for me it’s only a 3 hour drive to Jake’s. The accommodations were better, and the fishing was every bit as good.”

The following chart is a general rule of thumb suggesting best times for the average independent fisherman. If you go with a guide, fishing for any species is more consistent throughout the year.

Our guides are exceptional fisherman, and pride themselves on their ability to find the fish. They are also excellent cooks and will prepare for you a shore lunch you will never forget. If you prefer to head out on your own, we have excellent quality lake charts available in our convenience store. They are designed for navigation, and are the best available. We also have plenty of advice to share with you. We'll try to help you out as much as possible. Keep in mind Lake of the Woods is a very large lake, with many islands that can all look the same. If you are at all unsure of your map reading abilities, or orienteering skills, we recommend taking out a guide for a day, then trying it out on your own - when you have seen some of the lake. We can have great fishing right near the resort, depending on the time of year. Bottom line – we want you to have a successful vacation!

Guides

A great guiding experience is the most important factor for a wonderful vacation. LOW has fantastic fishing – but the weather can throw you a curve. That’s when nothing beats local knowledge. Our guiding staff is the best. They each have decades of experience fishing this great body of water. They love their job and enjoy people. Even if you are familiar with our area you will be a better fisherman after spending a relaxing day with one of them on these waters.

Don’t forget about the shore lunch! If you’ve never had a shore lunch – you need to, and for those that know - summer is coming! Fresh fish and shady pine trees, it is a meal you will long for.

You don’t have to worry about anything – its stress free and all taken care of - navigation, May fly hatch, bad weather, understanding the fishing regulations. The guide will tell you stories, history, information picked up that a person would never know otherwise. We really encourage new people to take a guide out for the first day. They will sit down with you with a map, and really get you going in the right direction.
